Those don't look like they stick out as far as the factory ***** do.

I changed mine to REDA? Retro fit bolts I got on Revzilla for around $18. They work great and have big thumb grip heads that are easy to tighten.

The stock fasteners work fine, as long as you make sure they lock down, have never had one come loose.

yes, they are big. but they don't really take up much room. on a trip, i use the saddlebag inserts and they don't really interfere with loading the bags.

I'm going a slightly different direction. I am going to use the 2017 HD part number 10400034 instead of the J nuts or whatever you can get at home depot, lowes or ace? I am then just going to use an allen or 12 point bolt to secure the bags and not lose any room in the bags. And even if the bags are unlocked a tool is needed to remove the bags.

The Harley nuts are pretty robust and only cost $2.03 each at Boardtracker.

I bought the Harley kit like comes stock on the new 2017 models. It was more money but I really like the look, feel and fit. My thought also was there would be no issues when you take it in for service as the techs will be familiar with it. Took five minutes to install.

I use these. Cost maybe $15 on eBay. They don't take up any room and stay very tight.
