Anyone know if I have to use the HD tool specified in the service manual to remove the ignition switch (base, not the switch itself....that is easy). I installed my aux lighting kit last night and ended up having to keep the fairing cap in place and accessing the switches from behind/underneath with a little bending of the plastic.
Install is done but if I need to add another switch at a later date I would like to be able to get the fairing cap completely removed. I believe the '06 models just had a nut to remove once the switch was off but with the '07s a special tool is listed to remove the switch body.

 

yes, "I" would recommend gettingthe tool........I didn't....Thank God I was able to use a screw driver to move the lever/cams down in the hole back to the proper position so that I was able to put the swtch back in..and unlock my folks..

I will get the tool next time, because it was luck this time.....so the tool will serve multiple purposes....

 

I was able to get my switch out and then back in with no issues, just couldn't get the darn body off itself. From the picture the tool sort of looked like a fancy screwdriver, I never did flash my light into the switch body to see what was in there but the mechanics of the switch itself pretty much said to me 'don't even touch this thing'

If you're talking about the "ignition switch alignment tool", the answer is "no". You can use a medium sized flat blade screwdriver to turn the deepest "tumblers" and the shaft of the switch itself to turn the upper ones.

 

I agree, you do not need the tool. I helps to shine a light up from the bottom to align them.

 

any one have part# of tool needed.

 

The only tool you need is your key!
