Loud Pipes vs. Loud Horns

RE: Loud Pipes vs. Loud Horns
Part of owning a motorcycle "for me" is hearing the beautiful notes and burble of the engine. Still, I don't need to PO my neighbors (even though they PO me with their lawn mower with the blown muffler) or the whole town.
So my new pipes are far from loud, but they aren't stock either. ...and I'm shopping for a very loud horn.

It's been my experience that neither will help. If some idiot is not paying attention to what their doing, no amount of noise will help. Better to take the time finding an excape route instead of hitting the horn.

Pipes do NOT save lives, they do take more of our rights away however. That phrase may have been somewhat true when it was first coined, some 40 years ago. But 40 years ago, cars had small AM radios, no air conditioner and no soundproofing materials in the doors and frames. Drivers also had no car phones/PDA's/Blackberrys/or other electrical equipment to take up their attention.
I drove fire trucks and ambulances for years and came up behind many people that had their windows up. Lights/Q-sirens/Air-horns all blaring at the unaware driver in front of my truck, and they never heard anything. They don't hear safety equipment, they certainly aren't going to hear a pipe that has the sound exiting behind the bike

If you have the time to sound your horn that means that you perceived the danger and you should have been able to take defensive measures and avoid the collision in most instances. Neither pipes nor horns will prevent an accident. Defensive driving will. That's my opinion.
