Default 10,000 mile service

Hi, i am new to the forum and buying a 2003 Road King. The Bike has 9,000 miles on it and i was wondering what the 10,000 mile service consists of ? I have already bought a service manuel and plan to do most of the work myself. I guess the question is should i take it to a dealer or is it resonable for an ex auto mechanic such as myself to be able to do it. Thanks in advance for your comments.

If you have the manual, you know what the 10K service consists of. You can do it by yourself, take your time and enjoy it. Congrats on the new sled!

No problem...

I've got 10100 on mine, and I'm trying to find the time to do the service myself. I need to order a fork tool to change out the fluid in my left fork, it has a cartridge. I don't think yours does...

Like I said, take your time, be ready to run out for some other stupid part, and you'll be good. This place is great for getting help if you get stuck...pictures are best, words are OK if you're good at describing it...search will probably help you with anything you need.

Like I said, if you used to be an auto mech, I expect you'll breeze through it...I'm a dumb jarhead and I figure all this stuff out!

Builds a personal relationship with your ride too. [sm=smiley20.gif]

Congrats on the new bike, also think about the tires. I have a 2003 with 10,000 miles and the back tire needs replacing soon.

DDDeepdiver,
Definetly do it yourself. I use this forum and the manual. I actually, (dare I say?), bought the fix my hog video. I found it very helpful to see certain things done in the video. My friend and I both bought 2005 bikes (RK&EG) and we took our bikes in to the dealer for the 1000 service. When we did our 5,000 we found plenty of stuff that didn't get done (loose fastners, Clutch, throttle lube). For me it is piece of mind knowing that it is done right. JMTC,RR

Just wondering what the dealership charges for the 10K mile Check up?
Iam sure I'll take the bike in for the 1K mile check up, but undecided after that

Do the service yourself. You will save a ton of money and you will KNOW what was done.

DDDeepdiver, Do it yourself you will enjoy it and you will be more comfortable knowing exactly how much oil is in the hole. Also, it ain't rocket science. I have a pretty good dealership but I still have to go behind them and tighten clamps, put my brake pads where they go etc. If you tell the parts guys you are doing a 10K service they will get all the oil, filter, gaskets (plugs on the 10K). You need to decide what oil to use and where. Alot of good info here for that-good luck!

Ride Safe,
Vern

Welcome to our piece of sanity on the internet.

By all means do it yourself. Since you are a mechanic and know your way around a cage, the HD is just another machine you need to get familiar with.

The service manual gives you step by step instructions on how to do the various procedures called for in the 10,000 service checklist.

Ask you local HD parts department for the parts necessary to do the 10,000 service. They have a set list of gaskets, o-rings and necessary things like spark plugs that get changed at 10K.

It is a piece of cake with a good jack, a quiet afternoon and a hot cup of coffee.

The real satisfaction comes from knowing you did it right and are not paying $80.00 per hour for some body making $10.00 per hour to go through the motions over your ride. There are threads here with horror stories of shoddy work done by stealers. Also tales of good work done by good men.

Get 'er done right. Do it yourself.
