RE: What is a Isolated Drive System and What does it do?
Go to the HD website and read all about it. In short it quietens and smooths out your drive system and makes shifting smoother. .It is standard on the 08 and for 300.00 plus labor you can retrofit it to an 07 but no earlier models. The o6 and earlier bikes do not need it as it was brought about to stop some of the noise that some riders complained about concerning the 6-speed transmission.

Or it was finally okayed by the bean counters after being vetoed the first time around. I don't recall hearing anything authoritative regarding it; is your statement fact or conjecture?

May be a stupid question but what is a Isolated drive system?
The IDS is a $300 part that masks the fact that your bike is a poorly engineered POS. As Mack so correctly stated, "The 06 and earlier bikes do not need it." There is no way that the design and engineering that went into the 07 models was far enough along to introduce it into production. All of us 07 owners were unwitting guinea pigs.
