Default Primary Oil Level

Does the Ultra (07) need to be level when you check the primary oil?

It does not say keep it level or place it on the stand in my service manual.

And, if anyone wants to comment on how to tell if the level is correct, that would be appreciated.

It's just not clear in the manual to me.

Thanks.

Thanks for the helpful response blaster.

I would still like some clarification on how to check that the level is correct.

Almost 7000 posts, Rick, and you waste your and my time.

The section titled "Primary Chain Lubricant", section 1.7, starting on page 1-16, in the 2007 version, DOES NOT say anything about whether to check it on the stand or not.

I was just looking for a little help, but I can see you, Rick, would not be the person to ask.

This falls under, think first, talk second.

I've been reading up on it myself because I intend to do the 1K service on both my RK and 1200C very soon.....I had the same question and here is what I came up with.

The service manual is written for service personnel, not owners.

That level of maintenance is usually done in a shop while bike is on a stand. Play it safe and stand her straight up when you pull the inspection cover.

rahall..... your right ,, it was uncalled for.... I was just funnin ya
I knew this place would give you the answer in no time......

rule of thumb for the primy..... 1 qt.

actually,, the primy is the tuffest to check, gotta remove derby cover while on jiffy,,,
look down into hole and see some oil,,,, rather stupid idea , my opinion,,,
why didnt they make a dipstck, like others???

32 oz, (1 quart) and you're good to go. Unless you have a leak, what you put in will still be there until you change it. I drain the oil, pull the derby cover (since the '07s don't have the inspection cover), put the kickstand on a 2X4 to level the bike out a bit, add 1 quart, put the derby cover back on, and i'm ready to roll.If it holds a quart and doesn't leak, and you initially add a quart, no need for measuring it afterward.

Only reason i throw a 2x4 under the kickstand is to help keep the oil from leaking out the derby cover hole before i get it sealed up.

Bike level. Some throw in a quart & call it good, & it seems to work. I like to fill to just at the bottom of the dirby cover opening. Gets the chain & the bottom of the clutch basket wet & leaves plenty to throw around when it's running.
