In my never ending quest to "make things better" (HAHA!), during my recent 120" motor build, I decided I would go ahead and install a "heavy duty" starter clutch. Not that I've had any problems... I just wanted to "make sure" I didn't. During the build, I never got around to installing this wizbang Spyke Kryptonite starter clutch.

Well... while my DD6 gearset was sent out to Bake for repair & all I could do was look at my bike on the lift, I figured I'd go ahead and install it. now, I have replaced starter clutches MANY times on my old bike and was very effeicent at doing so. Well, it seems the starter in my 05 is a little different design (even if they are "interchangeable") than my 02 was. I set out to do this quick swap ... & well... it was just a little different than I remembered. No biggie though, it's just a mechanical device.... right?

Near as I could tell all was well. I got the tranny back, installed it, and put everyitn gback together and @ 9:58PM last night I went to fire it off... It was before 10:00 PM... Well..... Instead of the wonderful roar of a high compression stroker w/ a FatCat... I got: CLICK. Not click, click... Just CLICK!

OK. It's been sitting for a couple weeks & it has been cold. I better hook up the charger, right?

Got up this morning & tried it.... CLICK!

Really "happy by this time".

Gotta pull the starter back out... Drain the new primary fluid & pull the cover, pull the pipe back off, and then pull the starter.

I tried it out of the bike & the drive just popped out (the CLICK!) & did NOT spin.

Pulled the starter apart & everything looked ok. Put it back together & still the same. Started looking at the motor part of the starter & managed to F it up in the process. Then I doscovered that the Hi-Zoot starter clutch was binding on the inside of the starter housing and that's what likely caused the whole damn thing.

So.... now, I have a truely broken starter that was previously A-OK....

I did have a "WTF was Phil thinking" moment 10 minutes ago when I saw you post that pic of your aircleaner cover. Why you would ever post a pic of your bike with chrome pipes on it is beyond me.

The more I think about that.... I might just go back & remove that pic!

 

Man, this 120 build is starting to get expensive..............LOL

That sucks, but now you can put in a bigger & better starter to handle that beast.

That is one thing on the 07's and up that is really a good design change, being able to pull the starter by only pulling two bolts and taking the battery cable off.

 

hmmm....with my true duals i can pull my starter with 2 bolts and a batt cable [8D][:-]

 

see............ you should have come over here and watched me scatter parts around the garage.

 

Only if ya pull REALLY hard & can get the pinion gear to snap off inside the primary.... [8D]

The real trick would be getting it back on that way.
