re ultra007 "Why" - Occasionally, especially after a hard ride, I sense a little strain on the starter on re-starts. And if stock CVO 110's need 'em - then I definitely need them on my '99 model! It seems unreasonable to me to have to reach into a hot engine to push down a couple of buttons. Honda apparently thinks along the same lines - automatic compression releases...

For most motors, releases are just simply not required. I have them on both bikes and NEVER use them anymore. We ride hard and hot and never required their use.
Is there sometimes a strain, maybe, but they both light up before 2 turns.
In order to require releases, your static compression would have to be up around 11 - 11.5 to 1, depending on the cams used. A well built 10.5 to 1 motor actually only has about 9.8 to 1 or so cranking ratio.
Auto releases are considerable trouble as stated before on CVO bikes.
They look and sound cool but simply not required on a motor with no other issues. The motor will actually not start as quick when using the releases.
If your heads aren't already drilled and tapped, it would be cheaper and easier to just install a high torque starter if you're worried about it.

Thanks Ultra007 - yes, I do appreciate your insight.
I now have CR's. Never had an occasion that the bike didn't start within 2 or 3 rev's, but I like the idea of having it turn over a couple of times before hitting the starter with any strain. That's just my inexperience showing, I'm sure.
I'm not sure what my corrected CCR is now, but it's something over the factory 8.7 or so. Never had a starter fail on my TC; had one go out on my EVO once. But if it does ever fail, I will definitely go with a high torqe model.

H-D issued a program to put ACR's on all 2007 Police 103 engines about mid model year under warranty.....Officers start their bikes up to about 50 times per day....way out of the normal duty cycle studies....the result of that many starts showed starter failures and damage to the starter drive and ring gear on the clutch hub.....the ACR's virtually eliminated that problem.
They became OE for the 2008 Police bike.......
The 103 police engine is 9.6 to 1 compression ratio.
One other thing....the Automatic CR's have a wiring harness and after installation requires the ECM to be programmed by the Dealers Digital Tech to activate the system. If you turn the engine over prior to that re-programming you could damage the system.
