I just replace mine at the same time that I replace the rear tire. Sometimes it's close other times not so much but I'm there, so I just do it. Now days the bearings are sealed but before they started doing that, it was a good time to grease them as well. Just rule of thumb for me, may be different for others.

My front pads look like new at 28000 miles, and my rear pads I replaced at 25000 miles and there was still about 2/3 of the pad thickness left.

It all depends on your riding style, and how hard you use your brakes instead of downshifting.

I use by rear brake in gravel and stoping at red lights/stop signs; I am a small guy so i can not sit flat footed at red lights/stop signs. My rear lasted to 10,000 miles and the front are the factory installed at 17,000 miles. I still had some pads left at 10,000 miles. You can check them easily by removing the bag in the rear.

I still have original rear brake pads at about 60,000 miles and still look good. I replaced the fronts at 16,000 miles for some lyndall brake pads and the originals would still be good if I had not replaced them they barely had any wear. the Lyndalls are a little softer but a whole lot quieter and better feel are about shot with ~44,000 miles on them. Now on my work bike it is a whole other story rears ~6000 maybe less and fronts a bit longer but not much. Like someone else said all depends on how you ride/drive.

Just did rears on a buddie's Ultra. He ridesa lot. The bike is just a 1 1/2 years old and has 20K on it. The rears looked almost new when compared to the real NEW ones we installed. Again....it all depends on your riding style.
