08 Street Glide - Whining noise
Hello, I'm new to the Harley family so if this is a stupid question forgive me. I just bought a 08 street glide and have put 800 miles on it so far and I've just started to notice a whining noise when i'm in 5th gear. As I throttle up the whining noise pitches up as well, but if I gear down to 4th the sound goes away. I'm at around 4000 rpms at around 70mph. It kind of sounds like the clutch is spinning. Any ideas as to what this noise is?

RE: 08 Street Glide - Whining noise
I first went to synthetic Lucas 80/90 gear oil in the trans and the 5th gear whine dropped by about 25-30%. Being a perfectionist, 2000 miles laterI went to synthetic Mobil 90/140 and the gear whine droppedby half. When I ride next to my buddy who has a 08 SG two months newer than mine, and we're both in 5th, I can hear his bike over mine! Now that's what I call satisfaction, go for it and you won't be disappointed. Superb results.

It's normal - they all do it! Sound familiar??
So far there haven't been any failures due to the whining gears that I know of. The reasoning behind making onepair of gearsthat sounds different from the rest is only apparent to the MOCO. Their explanation is that the straight cut gears are stronger, which is true. They mustfeel that the othersare OKbeing weaker for some unfathomable reason. Generally the gears are pretty quiet till the tranny case warms up and expands (which it does bigtime, since it's bolted directlyto that big overheating engine) and the clearances open up.
I've heard that Redline heavy shockproof tranny oil helps.
Ride safe,
John

Heavy synthetic gear oil will take care of most of the noise but no worries about it exploding in any case. The clutch is always spinning, if you think its slipping like my was off the showroom just take it back they will adjust at no charge most likely. When you go for your 1000 mile service you should bring the oil you want them to put in the bike.
