Default Painting your inner fairing?

I am wanting to paint my inner fairing and fork guage cluster on my Roadglide. I was wanting to know from those that have done this:

Does the paint hold up on the plastic?
What kind of primer is recommended?
Is is something that you have to be constantly careful with or can you just enjoy it?
Do you have to concern yourself with chipping where your fasteners tighten up?
Would you do it again?

Default painted inner faring

Had mine painted by a Hot Rod shop that my local HD recommended. They color matched the Vivid Black perfectly. Cleaning/waxing has been a breeze with the smooth painted service. No problems so far. Just enjoy it. If money is no object HD now offers the RG painted inner faring as an accessory.

My advice, hire a painter.

There are some who have done it themselves. (with a rattlecan) I tried it, followed their instructions, started over, tried a third time, said screw it. Just was not happy with the results. Have to add that the paint shop who mixed the paint for me warned me that pearl lacquer would not spray well from a rattle can.

I did:

Adhesion promoter
Primer
base
clear

Plus sanding, sanding, tackclothing, and more sanding (mostly wet) DAMN, theres a LOT of little nooks and crannies on those batwing innners!.

Could be my lack of skill, (most likely) but I never got it good enough to go on my bike. Not to mention that week I wound up selling the bike. I DO have another fairing Im gonna try just scuffing, and hitting with Krylon Fusion (paint for plastic) just for giggles, but that will be gloss black, not color matched.

Fat Baggers Inc does them for $375 for batwings, and $499 for Sharknose. (final cost after core charge refund)

How do you find your paint code? Im getting a 09 Pewter Pearl. I have a buddy who owns a bodyshop that will do it for free. I see Harley sells them also.

If you want HD paint, PM Dawg; he's great providing part numbers.

If you want PPG, see if your buddy can get the paint code for you.

If not, try the "other" forum--there's a sticky there and the author is excellent about coming up with PPG codes for HD paint. He has many earlier years just haven't checked to see if he has '09 colors up there yet.

Is PPG what Harleys are painted with?

You can buy the (official) paint from you HD dealer. Even in a spray can if its a CURRENT color. (could not believe that I could not get deep cobalt in a spray can in 08)

I have read from seemingly knowledgeable painters that it is; however, I have no personal knowledge. But many folks have used the PPG codes and are happy with the results.

I PM'ed you the PPG paint code and a link to the source of the information.

HD sprayable paint is only available in quarts (not counting the rattle cans) which is something of a deterrent for use when shooting an inner faiiring and cap since a large quantity of the paint will be left over. A benefit of the PPG code is you can buy the quantity your painter needs for the job.

Your bike will look sharp with a color-matched painted inner fairing , but consider, if you haven't, something other than matching the bike color--for example a vivid black with silver flake.

Good luck with your project.
