I have but always worry about damage I may be doing. I usually spend a couple of hours cleaning it up after the ride but I'm sure I don't get it all off.

 

I ruined my rear wheel last year. I wont make that mistake again. Once salt has been put down I am done now until the spring rains wash it off.

 

It amazes me as so many places for the darn $hit to get in/on a bike. I have always tried to spray it off asap, when I have rode. Pretty much now wait till after a good rain to clean off the roads.

 

I learned the hard way. Got some salt on some chrome engine pieces that I did not know about. I have replaced the cam cover already and need to replace the lifter coevers, the trans side cover, and the rocker covers. Ouch! Won't make that mistake again.

Last winter, on my old bike, both of my wheels got pitted from the salt. Never again.

And you are absolutely right. There is absolutely no way I take it back out until we have @ least 3 good spring rains. The MOCO already overcharges for their chrome so I am not about to contribute to my own stupidity..........

 

Because of the compacted snow and ice, they mix a lot of sand with the salt around here. So when we start riding in the spring, we wait for the sand to clean off which means the salt is pretty well gone also by then. I don't want to ride on either just for the sake of an extra week or two. Salt bad for the bike, sand bad for me.

 

+1. Never have ridden after first snow fall and/or before the roads are adequately cleaned by multiple spring rains.... never will. Love to ride but after 40 years of riding I'll sacrifice a few very cold weather rides to save my chrome. Just my .02.

 

I always wait until a good rain washes all of the excess salt off the roads before riding.

 

buy a honda for the salt flats, that way you won't lose much. keep the harley under wraps.
