Hi,
I was offered a 2000 EG with 100,000 miles on it. It's in good shape and according to seller never been in an accident or laid down. Now what worries me is the 100,000 miles... In your guys' experience, how many miles can you "safely" put on a Touring before the problems start? Would you guys ever recommend to buy a bike that is almost 10 years old and has that many miles?

+1. If he only wants a few grand for it, and everything else on the bike is good, you could throw some money into the motor and pay some attention to some of the other wear and tear items and still come in under what a lower mileage bike would cost you.

 

JMHO...cut the price in half, maybe a little more, and you might be getting a good deal. I see bikes with half that many miles going for the price he's asking. Take a real good look at the bike's condition, test ride it, take it for a check-up at a local indy you trust...then talk him down a ways on the price.

Not trying to offend...just my opinion...good luck with whatever you choose.

 

Standard, Classic or Ultra?

 

Thanks for the input! Do you really see a lot of Touring models under $10k? I don't seem to be able to find any either on ebay or craigslist etc for that price... I do see a lot in the $12k - $15k range but rarely anything under $10k...

 

Ultra Classic

 

Mileage isn't that big of a deal as long as the maintence is done along the way there. My 99' EGC now has about 75K and is running pretty good for her age.
That said, if your seriously considering the buy, on a 9 year old bike with 100K, look at the small things on the bike to see how well it has been maintained over the years. Look inparticular to the area where the heads & cylinder go together and the cylinder bases. Check the little things like brake discs, belt condition & tension, play in throttle & clutch, check the oil level. All these little things can give you a good idea of how the previous owner treated his ride. Worst comes to worst and still not sure ? Have your mechanic or local dealer give it a quick look and offer their opinion.
If your seller really wants to sell, he should'nt mind the inspection. Good Luck
