Default Neutral?

I have a question about neutral on my 2004 FLHTPI. I find it impossible to get the bike into neutral when it is running and standing still. No problem at all if the bike is running, coasting or off. But it won't go into neutral when idling at a standstill. What's up with that? Any advice would be appreciated.

Verify that you have a good clutch adjustment.

+1 on adjustment. What type and how old is the trans oil? That does make a diffrence.

Get a service manual and adjust the clutch and not just the cable. Any shop or dealer can do this for you but it's not difficult and can be done quite easily. You can also change the tranny and primary fluids - ATF in the primary and a good GL5 gear lube in the trans. If this doesn't alleviate the problem you may have something more serious that needs the attention of a good tech. Good luck.

Check your primary chain adjustment as well.

I have a manual and necessary tools. I'll take a look at the clutch adjustment this evening. Thanks for your assistance. I knew I came to the right place.

Overfilling the primary chaincase can also cause difficulty finding nuetral at idle.

Try this,
Apply the right amount of preasure to the gear shift,
At the same time you blip the throttle ever so slightly (maybe 100 rpm) and slip the clutch in and out so that it is just reaching the friction zone.
Should slide right nto neutral.
