You can download the whole S&S catalouge in PDF format, I would do that, it has pics of all the different engines and kits. I would think the S&S 124ci evo engine is cheaper than the Jims, but it is an Evo.

Well, I dont wanna pi$$ on your parade but imho 131ci is too much for the old frame. My 80ci evo was making 75hp and I got myself into plenty of trouble with that. I had a big excursion into a sugar cane feild (stayed on tho ) just for one example.

I had a brace on her, but she would still "shake her head" in big sweepers with a mid corner bump over 70 mph. The soft suspension didnt help. She never spat me off, but there were a few times where i was in a blind panic. You can usually ride it out if you just let her do her thing, but if you already have a board scraping that shake can be your undoing. Anyone who says it doesnt exist doesnt ride hard enough!! its there, and a symptom of the 3 point mounting system that you cant get away from completely.

The other thing about the 97 / 98 bikes is the swingarm. It is quite flexy too, and I am sure it was part of the problem. If you have a look at an 09 you can see just how much more steel is in the swingarm now to make it rigid.

On a final note the pizza cutting high profile tyres of the 98 are too narrow and flexy. The 09 with a low profile 180 on the back has a better chance of getting 130+ hp to the ground and tracks better too.

I went thru all this with my 1997, I looked at S&S power, big brakes etc etc but never did it because I was worried I would get into a situation that I couldnt get out of. When I rode the 09 I knew that finally HD had made the frame that serious tourer riders had been begging for over the last 15 years.

Its just my opinion. I love to corner, I dont drag and I live in the country so there isnt a lot of red lights anyhow. If you want a bike that is just for straight line work then the 1998 with a 131 will be an absolute ball tearer.

There will be no issues with chain driven cams in a Jims 131 EVO, they use gear driven cams like all other EVO's.

Nah, man. Jims 131s are all twin cams. The Evo ones have evo mounts, but are still twin cams. See attached extract from the Jims Book.

They all use the post 06 stye chain driven cams. (and internal oil pump).

KKK your not pissing on my parade lol... There are no such thing as wrong answers as long as they are honest answers . I apprciate the info . This started out as a school project for my son whos attending UTI ( phenominal trade school ... mechanics ..) When I was young and had more balls than brains , I roadraced a turbocharged Kawasaki GPZ1100 (air cooled in line 4 , thin Tube frame) in wera unlimited class (test rider actually) That was a flexable flyer ( still have nightmares , turbos and roadracing dont mix lol) . Now that im older and more brittle, lol, Im smart enough to know this machine will be a stait line runner . Ill use the Buell XB12R firebolt ( love that bike!! 88 kit from NRHS, race spec but only 10.5 compression to make streetable) for track days at Pocano . Admitatly it will be hard when kids come around with 600 Ninjas on twisty roads . Ill just keep telling myself this beast weighs 800lbs . KKK like you I also love to push the limits on the back roads ... Its like the old saying ... So soon old ... So late smart lol Jake

This is the S&S 124 that would fit - its a twin cam too. Its a 4 5/8 stroke x 4 1/8 bore stroker, same dimensions as mine. The Jims is a 4 1/2" stroke x 4.31" - under square.. The S&S should be a bit stronger in the mid range, Jims should be revvier...

Turbo GPZ?? Man thats hardcore. You are braver than most!!

Are you doing the work yourself? or are you using a dealer? or indy??

kkk we boght the 131 jims motor already to impress the teacher . The reason I wrote this theaed was to see if the 131 was cubes for the sake of cubes and if the cylinders would hold the displacement down the road . Your 124 is a proven motor where as the jims seems to be relativly new . I wondering if ill be looking at a holed cylinder down the road . kkk I dont know if you have ever punched out a motor too thin and paid the price? I know we did on several occations on the GPZ. I had a horrific crash at pocano years ago and it has caught up with me now . last year i looked like a arnold Swatzanagger light now I need percocet to walk around . So my son or the dealer will be doing the work depending if my son has the time . BTW thanks for the bravery comment but I was just young and thought I was invincable lol Jake

If you want my opinion the Jims will hang together just fine. Its not like you are gonna be able to hold the bike flat at 6000+ for any length of time - do that and you will have an wreck that covers several zip codes.

The 1998 will be a street brawler and see the odd run up the strip, the 131 will kick butt and be damn good at it. Enjoy.

Remember that dyno operators also "play" with their numbers to make their work look good too
