'06 Ultra Fuel Filter Replacement How-To w/ Pics
#81
I replaced the fuel filter on my 2007 Street Glide over the weekend. Could not have done it without this thread. A few quick points from my experience:
1. I did not drain the tank. I rode the bike about 20 miles after the fuel light came on. That was close enough to empty. It took 4.6 gallons when I did refuel.
2. I found I did not need to disconnect the fuel line at the fuel pressure regulator.
3. I found all of the descriptions about the hinge and springs and 45 degrees CCW to be extremely confusing. What I experienced was that the reference to CCW 45 degrees assumes you are looking from the back of the bike to the front of the bike, not from the top down. I would have explained it by saying to lift the right side of the canopy.
4. Even with all of the pictures and good descriptions I could not picture where the hinge was and how it helped. I learned that the axis of the hinge runs essentially from the back to the front of the bike and is located a couple of inches to the left of the left edge of the canopy immediately under the tank. Once I figured that out, things went pretty smoothly.
5. I echo what others have said about it being very difficult to get the tube onto the filter. I resorted to heat to get it done.
6. If you decide to do this, take your time. There is no need for any force to remove or replace this whole contraption. It would be really easy to break or bend something. Pay particular attention to not bend the float wire.

A trick, if you have to replace the in tank fuel like, cut a chunk of it about 8" of it, and split one side of it, and put it around your new in tank fuel line, at the very least you should not have to replace the fuel line again for a very long time. I secured it around mine with stainless steel wire.
