For the first few thousand miles, i countinued to follow the original starting instructions and waited foir the light go out.
I don't know about other years, but neither the '07 service nor owner's manuals say anything at all about waiting before starting. I have always hit the starter immediately after turning on the ignition switch and have had no problems.

yeah, people read that note in there about the light remaining lit for approx 4 secs after flipping the switch and assume that means that you have to wait. i will flip the ignition switch on, let the computer reset itself, then flip the run/stop switch on and give it a half second to pressurize and then hit the starter switch. starts immediately, and i have had no issues from doing it this way for the past three years. i would think that if it were wrong, i'd know by now.
if you wait a few seconds after turning your ignition on, you give the onboard diag in the speedo time to complete. if you hit it too soon, you could be running down the road at 90mph and your speedo registering 30mph.....
never seen that happen? .

It is not necessary to wait for the engine light to go out, nor does it instruct you to wait in your owners manual under "Starting your motorcycle" Simply ask yourself when is the last time you waited for the light to go out on your dash when you started your car. (unless you have a diesel LOL)
I wait for the fuel pump (assuming) sound to quit than fire her up. Sometimes when completely cold, after PCV, it cranks a couple of times before firing, but I don't care as long as she fires.
