JIVO - Thats very interesting to read about oil still being servicable after 5000 miles according to a lab doing what I would assume is an analysis on what impurities and metals that are in the oil at that mileage. It is still an individual choice and one that should satisfy your curiosity about the servicability of the oil in your engine. I was once involved in a similar program with the Mobil oil company in reference to oil serviceability in diesel engines after various mileages and time references. Bottom line - what ever makes you happy since it your wallet that is affected.
Has anyone EVER had an engine failure that was attributed to frequency or brand of oil used? Follow Harley's recommendations is my advice - for what it's worth
+1 on that! I have been saying this for years on the "Great Oil Debate". Use a good quality oil (synthetic or dino) and change it on a regular basis. 5000 for dino and 7500-10,000 for synthetic and you'll be fine. And if you own a garage queen, change it every 365 days (366 on leap years).
Synthetic oil. Mostly highway. I go for the 10K range, but, it's your wallet. 3K, I think, has pretty much been universally proven to be overkill, whether dino or syn, but again, it's your bike and your money. Change it when you want and don't worry about it!
oil breaks down, that's the point of synthetic oil. They say in a car it will last 30,000 miles. I have had synthetic in my corvette since new. If u are going to change your oil less then every 5000 miles I think you are wasting your money on synthetic. JMO
