My friends bike is a 2007 model. according to him the 2008 model has a 6 gallon tank. His bike is wrecked and he wants to have a larger tank than the original.

I think there was a thread done on this a long time ago and it involved a lot of work and some fabrication. So basically it would be a no.

When the 6 gallon tank can out on the 2008, there were many questions about if they can be mounted on earlier frames?

It can be done but with many part changes and welding on the frame.

The motor mounting locations were changed along with the location for the coil and a new seat. The Fuel Tank and seat points mounting points were moved. The seat was changed to make room for the new tank. The seat does not have the same mounting locations. They are not even close. To change the mounting locations for the motor will require removing the motor to cut the old locations and weld the new one in place.

The 6 gallon tank has made the '08 frame a "One Year" frame.

I am playing with a 6 gallon tank on my 1990 FLHS. The 6 gallon tank is longer and a little taller than the earlier tank, but also has a flatter bottom, so there is less clearance for things like the head steady. To fit one requires all the external trim for the newer tank, as none of the older stuff fits.

The seat will also need to be shortened and new rear mounts added. On my older bike I reckon it can just about be done, without the need for welding. More when I get it finished!

I just completed putting an 08 six gallon tank on my 07 ultra in April of this year. Only things that physically need to be altered are the plate on top of the frame where the rear of the tank bolts down, and if you don't buy an 08 stabilizer/horn bracket you can lower the stock 07 bracket which is what I did.

Being that your friend has a 2007, all electrical connections will mate and function correctly. I chose to purchase all new 08 tank internals, pump/filter, sending unit, etc but on ebay I have seen complete 08 tanks up for auction including the console and everything inside. If you want your instrumentation to function correctly you will also need to replace the fuel gauge and the speedometer because HD changed the resistance on the 08 sending unit, thats if you want the low fuel light to work correctly. And the seat, mine is from a garage sale. I was amazed and pleased that HD altered nothing else. Besides the link above to the thread I posted, I have an album on my members page with a couple dozen photos. If your friend is serious I would be happy to answer any other questions he might have.
