Default Can Anyone Enlighten Me on the New SERT with Autotune?

I hear the MOCO has a new SERT with autotune. What does this mean when it comes to tuning and dyno time? How about installation, does it still have to be set for your specific set up or does it figure it out after installation?

By the way it is not in the 2010 catalog. Thanks.

Casique,

I'm not sure about the '10 models and parts...I puchased a new SERT when I bought my 08 SG in Feb of 08. I had my local HD shop install and Dyno it....part and install was about 700 bucks. I hear that you are supposed to get a CD and cable so you can download specific tunes and/or tinker with it yourself via a laptop, but my HD folks said NO....that it no longer comes with these items....however I have been able to find them on Ebay, but hanv't pulled the trigger yet.

As far as set up, once it's tuned, it's tuned to your ECM specific...and it isn't a "learning" device...it is set and thats the way it runs. Any changes have to be made on the Dyno Machine....unless again, you can get the cable and CD and go that route....

The one issue is, you have to have a guy that know's how to Dyno a bike....the dyno is a complicated peice of machinery and computer electronics that takes time and experience to learn how to do it properly...and it's costly....those hourly mechanic charges rack up with an inexperienced Dyno guy....just my 2c

Most dealers also charge a minimum of 3 hours for any dyno tune.

Default Auto tune !

09' & 10 will auto tune there self after a few minutes run time ! You can change mufflers or a muffler and it will auto itself , but you ARE NOT gonna change headpipes , mufflers , and air breather and it tune it self ! O2 sensors only have a small window of tuning . You would want to get tuned right anyway if you gonna do all that header , muffler , air intake pc , ect .

My understanding is that the new SERT software will look at your dyno run and reccomend new settings for itself. Thats the extent of the Autotune, it is not real time or anything its just designed to save you dyno time.

I will be able to tell you in a couple of weeks as I have ordered the new software from Chicago HD.

It'll run but not right, and the o2 sensors only work in open loop, and when riding the bike isnt in open loop all the time, in fact when we are causing the engine to work hardest it is in closed loop which is exactly when we especially dont want it running lean.

Its been covered before but the o2 sensors are not meant for self tuning for hardware chnges, but for differences in fuel quality, altitude, etc., for which they do a good job.

Little backwards.

Closed loop is where the bikes run. At running temperature, Less than 50% throttle and under 4000 rpm = Closed loop. Factory 02 settings for (07 & 08's anyway) is 14.7 / 14.5:1 AFR.

Open loop is at cold start up and when your above 4000 rpm or more than 50% throttle. The AFR is close to 12.5:1 (rich). The lower limit of the 02 sensor is around 13.8:1. That's when they lose their ability to read.

Search the tech section. Lots of threads on how the 02 sensors work and how the ECM uses them. There's a 1600 post thread on the IED's that really covers the topic as well as the tuning section. I don't think it's changed much, or backwards, for the 09's and 10's.

Are you saying the ECM will tune itself without a SERT and Autotune?

nocarb, the 02 sensors do self tune, to a point. they alter the mixture to allow for small changes like mufflers or an air cleaner or both. by that time it's recommended that you get the stage 1 download or flash as they call it. i am now using a pcv without the auto tune and with a canned map. it does have considerably more torque or pull feel to it, but i'll be removing it in favor of a new sert or sest, after studying them a bit more. but the stock 02 sensors do a good job of monitoring and altering mixtures to an acceptable limit. of course per e.p.a. restrictions.

I am looking at getting the sert and autotune this winter and try tinkering with it myself.
