Always thought the year designation was one of the most useful aspects of the current numbering system. WHY?!?!?! (and when?)

This is on the back of the speedometer on a small white label. I tried looking this number up in Chicgao HD website. Got the same thing, no number found.

Why - HD claims under the current numbering system, they will run out of part numbers by 2012.
When - the original documentation claimed that all new products beginning in Dec 09 would have the new pn#'s. However, I did not see that happen. I'm wondering if the new products released at the summer dealer show this year will or not.

One easy way to not run out of numbers is to stop using Harley part numbers for all of the clothes and junk that is for all of the tourists. Just use the regular part numbers for motorcycle parts. Use the new numbering system for all of the shirts, ear rings and other junk that they sell in the Boutique section.

Hmm - or they could have just used another digit up front. My understanding is this is consistent with the rest of the auto industry but I don't like it.
