I want to know what is the heaviest weight any one has pulled behind their touring bike? I pull a small trailer behind my 07 Ultra in the mountains of North Carolina with no problems. But, now we have 2 dual sport bikes that I am wondering if I can pull them behind my bike up the mountains. My bike has 255 cams and the 30 tooth belt pulley change. The weight of the 2 bikes would be approximately 600 pounds, then the weight of the trailer.

Just wondering what is the heaviest any one has pulled?

I pulled this one in the mountains last summer without any problems. Gross weight about 300 pounds.

If it were me I would not pull 1 bike much less 2 regardless of weight. Things like the effect of wind, emergency braking... I just would not do it.

 

yeah, I can't imagine trying to make an emergency stop with 600 lbs behind a bike. What you can get away with, and what you can safely get away with are two different things. For what its worth, for example, N-line trailers weigh 79 lbs and they don;t reccommend loading it with more than 100 lbs. The trailer itself is built substantially strong to hold considerably more than that, and taking liability into consideration, that's their suggestion. Still, 600 is 2/3 of your bikes wieght and stopping would have to be a serious concern.

I saw a guy crash is Ultra about two years ago pulling a trailer when his rear wheel lost contact with the road on a downhill sweeper. Fortunately the guy was wearing a helmet but unfortunately he was only wearing jeans/T-shirt. I won't go into details what his back looked like.

Anyway, each to his own but it cured me of any desire to pull a trailer.

 

Believe it or not, my Dad pulls one of these (http://www.leesurelite.com/) with a Suzuki Burgman 650 scooter. Loaded weight runs at or slightly less than 300 lbs and he says the bike handles it just fine. He's pulled trailers for a bunch years now so he should know.

Anyway, if a 650 scooter can handle it, I don't see an Ultra caring one way or the other!

300lbs is a lot different than 800 plus, doesn't sound like a very safe proposition to me, your bike could probably pull it, but it would be straining it to the max. If you're planning to pull 2 bikes that means you'll be trying to stop nearly a ton of weight with the contact patch of 2 motorcycle tires, doesn't sound very safe to me.

 

I pull about 450 during the summer. My OL weighs about 260 and my custom trailer about 200 on a stock 04 EGC!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

I would wonder if the brakes on an Ultra would be up to stopping as much as 2000 pounds of weight on two wheels. Surely, the engineers didn't take pulling trailers into account when designing the braking system. Of course, the rider can compensate for longer stopping distances IF the bike's tires are getting good traction, but what if the surface gets slippery?

Poor traction is difficult enough to manage on just the motorcycle, and a lot worse pulling a trailer. Not something I'm willing to chance.
