Not a SG, but Ive done it on my 05 Classic. IMHO, its not quite as nice as chrome, bun done properly, it looks very good. Certainly MUCH better than stock. Polished aluminum is not quite as "smooth" looking (not quite the mirror finish that chrome has) and is a bit more "warm" looking.
Sent mine to a guy in Colorado, Front Range Polishing. He does VERY good work. I had him polish the wheels, rotors, shaft drive hub, and forks on my VTX1800, and when I got the 05 Classic, I had him do mine and a buddys forks.
The nice thing is, he wont make you take them apart. Just take them off the bike and ship them. He quoted me 2 weeks time both times I used him, and he hit it dead on 2 weeks both times. Great guy. I get the sense he is a somewhat older guy, one man shop I believe, and really puts pride into his work. As he says on his website, if you call, your talking to the guy that does the work.
As I recall, it was about $70 per fork leg for the Harley.

In these photos, I think the VTX truly shows how it looked. For some reason, the shine just never showed up well in the photos I took of my Classic, probably just the lighting at the time I took the pics.

polished lower legs
Like others have said, they are a lot of work to keep up and they take a while to do. I will probably change them to chrome over the winter. The ring you see at the top of the sliders is because my bike was on a scissor jack when I took these pics. There is no weight on the shocks.
