Did this on my 06 Road Glide. The issue is that the wire from the switch is tied into another wire for the radio control. I had to pull the harness from the handlebar, cut and splice above the t connection. Works great!! If you have a service manual, look at schematic and you will see what I am talking about.

 

Anybody done a step-by-step writeup for how they modded their connection?

I went the low tech route.
I used velcro to put an opener on my fairing. When we park and cannot see the bike, or if it starts raining, I pull it off and put it in the tour pack.

 

Ha..Thats what i use except i zip tied it to my throttle cable.....Works great!!
