I agree, but haven't found a suitable one yet!

Very helpful pics. Thanks

So what's the group's thinking on replacement frequency? Should I stick with the original 2009 interval (25k mile, I think) or go wider?

I do 25k and inspect/change the housing too.

Dawg --thanks for the Snap-On link.

I am going to buy the tool, as I have a very bad history with motorcycle gas tanks and fire. When I was a kid, I was customizing a bike in my parent's basement. Unfortunaley, we poured gas in the tank before installing the line that equalizes fuel in the two lobes of the tank. Gas ran to the floor and fumes were ignited by the pilot light on the hot water tank. POOF, went the family home.

Here is a picture of the tool I made a few years ago…..I like the snap-on idea but the right water filter wrench would work and would be less $$$$$.

I would change it every 25k….cheap insurance!

More on replacement frequency. My 09 SG has 26k miles and the original filter. At the OC Bike fest last weekend, a very skilled Zipper's/Thundermax tech (Dan F.) was looking for the cause for my super rare engine ping. One thing he tested was fuel line pressure. The reading was on the low side of the HD-recommended range (sorry, forgot the values). Tech said the low reading almost certainly was due to a dirty filter and told me to change it this winter. I will. He follows the 25K miles schedule.

Re ping, we concluded that it was likely caused by bad gas and very high ambient temperatures.

How will changing the fuel filter effect the tune? My dyno guy specifically asked me about the mileage on the bike when he performed my dyno tune at 19K. He said at 25K if I change the fuel filter I should retune.

True?

All these years I've been doing it wrong...

A leather mallet and a brass punch have always worked for me.
