Default Fuel Tank Filter Removal

Currently performing 25,000 service on 08 FLHR. My maintenance schedule says it's time to replace Fuel Tank Filter (part# 61011-04A). Ok, no problem. After following Service Manual instructions it says I need a HD48646 Fuel Tank Cam Ring Remover/Installer to remover the assembly to get to fuel filter. Where can I purchase one? Thanks.

Have you tried to remove the cam ring by hand? I recently bought a secondhand tank and have everything I need to install it except that ring! My local dealer has never stocked one, but I will be trying my best to get away without a tool. I understand the tool costs around 70 bucks.

Found the tool through George's Tools. Yep, $72 without shipping. I bought one anyway since I'll need it again at the 50, 75 and 100,000mi servicing.

Dawg says a hammer and a blunt object will do it.

yup, gently tap the tabs with a blunt hard object and a mallet and it unhooks the cam ring from the tabs.

I'm still waiting for a new ring for my tank. How easy is it to lock the ring in place by hand?

I'm over 23K now and will be performing this maintenance soon on my bike. I'm hoping I'm able to do it without the special tool.

Is this something only on the newer touring models. My 02 is just getting there 20+ (I just got it last year) and I checked my manual and it seems to be all normal tools.

Special Tool my ***. I remember doing the same thing with a Car Fuel Tank. Where the Fuel Pump used to be in the Fuel Tank. I would lower the Fuel Tank and I would use a wide tip screw driver and a rubber mallet and "tap tap tap" the locking ring off.
I will be doing the same next month. I'm at 20,115 Miles now.
