the bike is setup to run lean in stock form, changing the air filter alone shouldn't make it run much leaner... but changing the air cleaner AND the exhaust WILL make it run alot leaner!
it's an air cooled motor, so anything you can do to make that thing run cooler should be a big help.
after you remove the CAT, you should use a tuner to help make the bike run cooler, aftermarket tuning software WILL not only make it run cooler, but will also give you some more power.
the TTS MasterTune is tuning software.. it requires NO computer change.

Be forewarned... I removed the cat, rotozip w/fiber wheel, air hammer with chisel bit (metal is damn near 1/4" thick there) and a welder. Had it out and welded back up by a buddy in no time. Soon after I installed 255 cams. With the increased duration or whatever it was, around 2800 rpm it sounded like someone was playing drums on the motor with carpenters hammers.
Turns out it was the chamber the CAT was in resonating. Annoying as hell. Sounded wicked unless you were on it in that rpm range.
My .02 cents.
