Default wrinkle black engine parts

Im putting chrome rocker covers on my FLHT. I would like to save some coin and have my take-off covers done in wrinkle black to match my misses wrinkle black FatBob engine.

Sould this be done in powdercoat or paint?

Anyone here actually done this and how close did the colors match?

Am I better off just sucking it up and dropping another 4 bills on the HD covers?

Check Ebay for factory take off covers from another bike. May be cheaper and you can sell yours.

Could always take your polished covers and sand them to scuff them up a bit and then shoot them with HD wrinkle black spray can paint and then bake them in the oven.

check on ebay, there is a seller voodoo something that sells the parts pretty cheap already done, and you could sell yours for about if not more on what you paid.

i just had about 60 parts powdercoated (some gloss, but all engine covers done wrinkle) and it cost about 425 bucks for everything from a local powdercoater.

I posted the same question on the Dyna board and was given the advice to make sure I have wrinkle and not texture black..Whats the difference if any? If there is a difference how can I tell which ones I have.

How about the pushrod and tappet covers. When I go to replace the rockers how difficu;lt is it to replace those at the same time?

A good powder coater in your area should be able to match it up for you. No need to spend a ton at the dealer buying new covers. I had my rocker covers, primary, trans cover and cam cover powder coated for under $200.

For the rocker covers, make sure to get the cam on the base circle -- one cylinder at a time -- so you don't bend a pushrod. The pain with the rocker boxes and the tappet covers is clearance. For the rear cylinder, the tight rocker box clearance from the frame makes using a torque wrench very difficult if not impossible, even with crows' feet (snap on makes adapters that work, but they're about $50 a pop). For the tappet covers, it's just time consuming with a shortened ball-end hex key.
