The caliper grease I used does not stay like grease. It dries and puts a slick coat on the metal parts so they slide back and forth

JUst a FYI

I believe the thicker stuff holds back the brake fluid.
Stock brakes come with that ge versilube stuff that is thicker than brake fluid.

They say in my manual that coating your pistons with dot 5 will give you a spongy lever. It is a warning in bold letters

Sounds like there is a message there!

Having only 14,000 miles on bike, I did not rebuild the front. Parts looked ok. Just cleaned it all.

Winter is not over, might go back in and put new seals and wipers in.

Just did the back brake. New seal kit and new pads. For $30.00 I should have put new seals in front.
I still went with the permatex coating on the pistons on back.

I think you did a good job Straightleg. But I agree with some of the others about using caliper grease on the inside of the pistons. I too have rebuilt a lot of calipers over the years and always used brake fluid for lube. Never had a problem. I'd be interested to see over a period of time, if the caliper lube inside the piston bores causes any problem. Keep us posted.

Great write up Straightleg. I am going to be doing this over the next day or two since my front brakes are dragging.

Any tips you can pass along?
