Default Anyone tell me the temp of your exhaust heat shields?

I am getting my stock 2010 FLHX exhaust heat shields powdercoated and the guy says that his powder is only good to 250*. Trying to keep the same color throughout- anybody have a electronic surface thermometer, the point and shoot kind, that can take the temp of your heat shields when you get your bike good and hot?

Are you sure on 250? Powder is cured at over 400. Most standard powders should be good to over 600.

What he was refering to was that it might get soft at 250* or so, even though it is cured at a much higher temp. And then rocks and sand and $hit would stick to it.

So the stock heat shields with the stock chrome bubbled off? Now in talking to this powder coating dude, he said that with an extra layer of coating on it will trap more heat so I could see that with a light scuffing of the chrome, and powder coating over that, that it might trap more heat and bubble off the chrome. Hmmmm.... I am kind of at a loss as I want to black out a few things and this seems to be an issue. I am glad that I checked on here before my newly powder coated exhaust heat shields burst up into flames and all the chrome burns off!

I think I am going to have to do some checking around and get some kind of ceramic heat coating in a flat black...

Thanks for the heads-up guys, and if anybody is still able to get a true temp on their shields, let me know!

Might want to post this over in the Paint and powdercoat section too. There's also a member here JRK5892 that runs a powder shop (Powder Pro) I know he says powder will stand up on the shields.

I've got Gloss Black Standard powder on my heat shields and so far it's holding up well
