OD 5 1/2 inches...ID 4 5/8 ich....was sometype old sewer pipe I had in the scrap pile. Its 3/8s thick...On the outer edge there was a grove for and 'O' ring or something which I opened up to 5 iches with a sander. This way the ring fit inside.
Beats the $100 heavy metal tool they sell.

Yea and the '08 and above you don't need 10 sealing screws @ $1.00 each and the gasket @ $7.00 or so. So it is cheaper too.
Before I did this I spoke to the parts guy at my local dealer about what parts I needed. He looked up on his computer and said they have only sold 1 filter in the last 12 months.
I think the way it works at my dealer or possibly all of them is that the service department "buys" the parts from the "parts" department for accounting purposes. This leads me to believe that there are a lot of bikes with way more than 25k on the filters without major problems.

So I was troubleshooting a possible fuel line issue and took a look at my filter and with only 7K on the bike my filter looked just like the one in the first post. I think they just look that way and changing them any sooner is a waste of time. I used a piece of oak board and a hammer to get that ring off. The ring comes off easy and there really is no need for a special tool.
