Default 5000 mile service?

I've got a 2010 Roadglide...21,000 miles. Every 5000 miles I get the service done. The dealership in Alton,Illinois that I go to really does a great job and are very dependable. However that 5000 miles comes up way too quickly. So I'm planning on having my oil changed (HD Synthetic ) every 3 or 4000 and only get the major service done in the spring since the bike is stored all winter. I've always been told that HD's will hold up well only if maintained by the book.
Am I making a mistake...just to save a little time and money?
Thanks
RonC

I think the major service is every 10,000 miles. The 5000 mile service is a "minor service" but still expensive. I've been doing the service myself. Give it a try. It's not hard and it will save you a lot of money.

Buy a service manual and do as much stuff as you're comfortable with. It's dirt simple to change the fluids and you'll save a lot of money on just this. As you get more comfortable you can expand on what to service. You'll also feel A LOT better knowing you did the work.

All vehicles last better when propperly maintained. Air cooled vehicles take more frequent oil changes because of the higher variences in temps that they experience. On my Harley I have the shop do a service every 5000 and I do my own oil changes in between. I also have a air cooled car that requires service about every 3000 miles.
