Default 2005 Road King, what to do to gain MPG??

I have a 2005 RK Standard, stock 88 engine, K&N airfilter and I cannot get any decent fuel mileage, I'm talking 30 to 33 mpg on every tank.
What can I do to improve this?
I am looking at camming this with Andrews 26A cams and upgrade the camchest to the hydraulic tensioners as well. Is this going to improve mileage as well as performance?
This bike is carbed, will a S&S Super E help mileage and performance?

Really like this RK but the fuel mileage sucks, I wouldn't mind it if it ran like stripped ape, but it doesn't.
What do you experts suggest??

Slow down! It takes fuel to push your bike against the wind. the more you twist the right hand grip the less fuel mileage.

if you want to improve MPG, you are talking doing things to run leaner, leaner bike is a hotter bike, hotter bike is less reliable, heat gets into everything. You can not have performance, efficiency, reliability at the same time.

Drop a 100" Victory engine in it. My buddy gets 50 mpg and runs like a scalded dog. All kidding aside do a compression test to see the condition of you engine. Might be time to move up to a 95"-97".

Can you provide some more details about how you ride--*****-to-the-wall, or easy?; freeway or city, how much of each? etc. I see why you're concerned. 33 MPG is pretty low for your bike. I get 38-39 in the winter with my RK (88", Stage 1, 203 cams), 42 MPG now with air temps in the 90's. The more information you can provide, the more focused the help will be.

Mosendero,

Here's what I did when my started getting bad...

I took her straight to the dealer and had the Stage II, 95" kit and racing cam installed. Fuel mileage? It's a f'n Harley. We don't need no stinking fuel mileage!

Seriously, after upgrading the engine I get better mileage and she ran great. Loved the extra torque curve and throttle in fifth gear. So, upgrade or trade in. Those are you two best bets.

Another vote for the 95 kit with cams, or you can get it dynoed and find out what your a/f really is.

I know you don't want to hear this, but for the 2005 year, with the 88" and Stage 1 upgrade (similar to what you describe) it is not uncommon to get that low fuel mileage. I have a 2005 Ultra and that is consistent with what I get. I don't dog it, nor do I drive it conservatively, but overall I am at 33 mpg. When I get on the road and take it above 75 mph, it drops to 31. When I get in the mountains, I'm upwards of 42 mpg. I run premium, have Stage 1, and fuel injection. Our 5-speed trannies also limit the m's / gallon as well...

I've got an injected 06 wood tw-6, 95" big boyz heads true duals and I'll get 40 mpg on average and in the high 40's in the mountains where you have to ride slower. (putting around) and I've also got a power commander. I'm pretty sure if you get a decent tuner to work with your carb you can do better. what do your plugs look like?
