Default 2008 RoadKing Police

Looking at one later on this week that's for sale, has about 11k miles, abs, 103 and just had the 10k HD Service. What are some things I should look for, and what if any are the issues w/this model/year etc?

Thanks for your time and responses!

the value in the pre 09 framed bikes seems to have plummeted, so hope you are looking at a great price.

cop bikes have unique electrical systems and you gotta get a manual with cop wiring diagrams.

BEST left close to stock or used as a start to a complete custom.

make sure it's what you really want

if used for parade or display use, the rear brake and clutch may be well worn.
( check some of the youtube videos of cop bikes doing parking lot displays, you'll notice the rear brake is applied much of the time, and the clutch is often being slipped)

cop bikes do not have "special sauce" performance motors- so don't expect that

I like the ex-cop bikes, but I'm a little biased. They make a good starting point if you want something a little more custom than just a plain-Jane stock bike. 11K miles is nothing, and even if the bike was in service, the mechanicals should be in good condition. Even so, you should be getting it for a significantly reduced price as compared to a civilian bike, even if most of the cop stuff has already been removed and the bike civilianized. Check the brakes and clutch, and be prepared to finish some of the wiring work that may or may not have been done correctly when the lights and siren were removed.

^^^ What he said. I ride an 08 that I got with 6K and I love it. Expect with any police bike that there are some scrapes on the engine guards and under the floor boards ... that's just part of the training.

I bought an 08 RK police bike August of 09 for $14,000 out the door. it had 1200 miles on it and was 1 1/2 years old. GREAT BIKE I haven't had any problems at all, and only changes I made is D&D Fatcat 2-1 exhaust, tuner and air cleaner. love the solo seat, great performance. bike has 19,000 miles on it now. I'd buy another one in a minute!

I was looking at doing the same....but ended up just buying an '11 FLHTP that nobody wanted. I wouldn't go with a pre-'09 bike...big improvement with the newer frame.

Have a mechanic look it over. Cop RK's are great as long as they are not service worn. With 11k, that shouldnt be an issue generally. I've had 3 and liked them all. Only kind of roadking I buy now.
