I purchased a Yuasa Digital Powersports battery tester a while back and have used it a few times to test the battery in my current bike and previous bikes. I've always been a little leery of it in that it almost instantly indicated that the battery was good. From what I've read about using this tester, the almost instantaneous indication of good/bad is how this tester works.

The tester is very easy to use. Connect the battery, set the voltage and amp/hour rating of the battery, and push test.

Today I came across the tester in the garage and thought I'd go ahead and test the battery just to see what it said. It came back with a bad/replace display.

The battery is fully charged and so far has not given me any issues.

Anyone here had any experience with this battery tester as to its reliability or overall usefulness in determining battery health?

I could take the battery out and have it tested somewhere else, but this tester is supposed to be designed for testing motorcycle and other small batteries, so is there any good reason to doubt its results?

If I do get a new battery, it won't be until spring when I get ready to take the bike out of storage for the summer.

They also gave me $5.00 for my old one but i dont know if they still do that. I never saw the guy....Gave them my CC info and left old one on front stoop and "walla" 2.5 hours lator new Battery!!!...

the "real" way to test a battery is to take it out of the bike

( which you should do anyways if the bike is stored for the winter)

charge it fully with a real battery charger


then take it to an auto parts store that load tests the battery for free.

then you'll know

Hey Thanks! Another place close to me as a resource.

I've used Batteries Unlimited out of Addison, IL. They paid me $5 for auto, $10 for deep cycle, no need to buy a battery from them. But $0 for small lead batteries. They also have a fancy tester that shows CCA.

 

After 6 years and 31,000 miles my battery needed replacement. The starter was turning the engine over very slow and the trickle charger took a long time to go from "yellow" to "green".

After some internet research I just went up to my local NAPA dealer and to my amazement they had a battery in stock! It is a Deka ETX30L. AGM, sealed, with 400 CCA. $129, the NAPA guy thought it was expensive until I told him what a HD battery costs at the stealer! I'm very happy with the battery. When I compare my new and old I could swear they were both made at the same factory except the HD is black and the Deka is mostly white.
