Thanks for the replies guys. I talked to the dealership and they said not to worry about it either, unless it throws a code. It hasn't. I just thought it was kind of weird to do so with the air temp being so low. It's the first time it's done it at any temp below 100 degrees.

I'll keep an eye on it and if it does it again, I'll have them check it over when I have the 10k service done in a few weeks.

Thanks again guys, I knew I could count on you. By the way, the coolant is fresh and at the proper levels, and the thermostat is brand new.

The HD air-cooled motor cools through forced convection (air must be moved over its cooling fins). The greater the differential of both the OAT and amount of air moving across the surfaces, the more cooling that will take place.

Keep in mind that your motor can see air intake temps as high as 175 degrees F even under relatively cool, no wind conditions. Add to that the temps being produced by the motor and you can easily see some fairly high motor temps...high enough for the "parade mode" to kick in.

Assuming no recent map/mod changes that could account for the temps, sounds like the system is doing what it's designed to do.

They also cool by moving oil and we all know syn dissapate heat better. Look into a oil cool it too if it is a concern.
