Default Road King owners, tired of your chrome windshield nuts rusting ?

I replaced all my windshield hardware with stainless steel 1/4-20 X 3/4 and 1/4-20 X 1 inch button head Allen screws and stainless acorn nuts. I got tired of the cheap chrome hardware rusting from riding in the rain. The stainless looks better and will not rust. I got everything I needed from Lowe's for less than 20 bucks.

Cool idea. I personally haven't had mine rust on any of my bikes as I keep the chrome hardware waxed.

That's a good idea. Havent thought of that. I must admit I am not a detailer. I ride a lot in all kinds of weather and rarely detail my bike. It's usually just a quick wash job to get the bugs off. I do use a dryer but those damn chrome windshield bolts always rust quickly. I am always looking for tips to minimize the cleaning !

I've had no issue what so every with rusting bolts. Maybe they used better hardware in '99?

Stainless Steel fasteners are great. They can be polished to a mirror finish and won't rust. The thing to remember about Stainless is that it's not as hard or tough as steel. They are about equal to a grade 2 bolt. They are perfect for 99.9% of the fasteners visible on a bike but if it requires a high strength bolt stick with grade 8 steel and chrome it or paint it.

7- of the 3/4 and 2 of the 1 inch. The one inch go where the mounting brackets are doubled up. I also used 3 dish washers on the top bracket. Really dressed it up a bit.

Guess I've been lucky, this is one area on my motorcycle that has gotten zero maintenance. No rust for me since 2005, 89,000 miles and I've seen quite a few rain drops. Must be a hit or miss thing. Glad you found a solution for yours.
