Default 2005 Road King engine remanufacture

I had posted a thread earlier about my check oil engine light that came on with 30 days of ownership. I did the right thing, parked it within 5 minutes of the light coming on and had the dealership pick it up to take a look at it.
Diagnosis: Inner cam bearing spun in the case, evidently welded itself to the case and sent metal throughout the engine.
Cure: Engine remanufacture program through Harley

After making my first payment of 60, a $4,200 bill for a reman is a big sandwich to eat.

Anyone have any recent experience with this Harley program?
Anyone know what the dealership COST of this is? (15% of retail is what they are offering)
If i am going to go this route, it it worth it to upgrade to the 95ci engine?

Thoughts? Opinions? Other options I have not considered?

Not a stupid question at all, personally I would probably not go to the dealer, but that's me. Does the $4200 include labor? What is the total cost? Personally I would call somebody like Frank at Dragos and talk to him, get his opinion, and may also call a few more shops. And yes, might as well go bigger while its apart, best time, you have to get new parts anyway...

Nonsense - we were at lunch - takes us a couple of hours with a nap.....

There are specialist engine builders out there who can strip and rebuild your motor, repairing where necessary, and doing all manner of wonderful things not available at an average dealer. There are a few sponsors of HDF it is worth talking to before you commit yourself to the factory reman programme.

If you send H-D a knackered TC88 you will get back a bone stock working TC88 engine which will probably not be the one you sent to them. That's a lot of dough for no gain! To convert it to a 95 will be an additional cost, over and above that 4.2k.

The dealer has come down on price, so the 88 is at $3600 and the 95 is at $4200.

The other option is to get a motor off ebay for $2000.

I have seen the HD Reman program in action- I really liked what I saw at the factory and how the guys were treating "real motors" that belonged to real owners.

as pointed out the motors are rebuilt ( or replaced, they can replace everything and stamp it with your VIN) to stock specs

the thing that puts me off is the requirement that the dealer do the pull and install- i think that drives the cost up.

but they do warranty the work.

I think the Harley engine manufacturing program is a good deal and you have the benefit of also getting a warranty. I have two good friends who have gone this route with very good success. The motors that come back will indeed be stock, but they look and run new with warranty. My .02, if i were in your position its what I'd do.

It depends what ya want, and how much it's worth to you. Nothing wrong with the dealer option if ya want a stock warranty engine. If ya can do the install, or close to someone that can, and want power there are lots options. Since your bike is out of warranty anyway, I would stay as far from the dealer as possible.
