2000 FLHR Road King Oil Help
I want to start by saying I do appoligize if this is an over post i'm new here, but any direct help would be appreciated! I have a 2000 FLHR nearly stock with the stock 88" engine I purchased it about a month ago from Northside Harley Davidson here in Indy I've put between 2000-2500 miles on since I called to check service records they did a 1000 mile service when it was brought in and did standard HD dino 20w50 in all 3 holes! My question even when its chilly (55deg) it feels pretty warm around my legs and when i stop at an idle the more i ride the louder it is everytime i stop it's ticking while idleing if anyone has any ideas on what it may be please help? I'm hoping changeing the fluids will solve it I can't afford $130 to buy everything at HD i was looking at Castrol Power RS VTwin 4T 20W50 in all three. If anyone could help with the noise or oil I'd appreciate helping a young rider out??? Thanks in Advance, Chris

when introduced , the Twincam drivetrain was spec'd for HD Syn 3 in all 3 holes.
more recently the spec for the tranny and primary has changed to "primary +"
with Syn 3 for the motor oil.
I stick with the HD fluids- I have had no miracles performed by other brands- and HD is a high(er) zinc content than a "car motor oil".
the synth resists break down under high temps- and the oil in a twin cam is exposed to very high temps- it is sprayed at the underside of the pistons to carry heat away from the internals

no I don't. but an oil formulated for air/oil cooled motors is different than an oil for liquid cooled motors.
adam carolla has a car podcast, recent edition with Lake Speed Junior has some interesting oil info.
Just about every guest he has is asked about dino vs synthetic ? always interesting.

My local HD mechanic told me they are no longer using engine oil in the trans, use a good gear oil. I use Brad Penn 20/50 racing oil in mine, has higher zinc phos then most oils, they also make motorcycle oil, is some of the best oil in the world, for some reason it sticks to metal better then other oils.

100% what this guy said. My '99 runs great with this combination. And yes there will be ticking and engine noises after this...its a Harley!
