Default 2005 Ultra Classic questions...

I'm seriously considering moving to a bagger. My wife has been riding passenger with me for over 30 years and... while I would like to say I am doing it for her comfort, I have to admit it would be for mine as well.

Found one with 16,000 miles (two tone Sapphire and Platinum pearl) being sold by an older gentlemen.
Other than chrome goodies the only real add ons are a screaming eagle intake and slip ons.

I'm hoping someone with experience with a 2000 - 2006 model could educate me about the model.
Any information at all would be greatly appreciated.

Lee

I'm a big fan of the 88" motor with the 4" stroke.

None of the compensator/heat/starter issues of the 07 and later bikes and still running a cold forged crankshaft. Only area to check would be the cam chain tensioners at around 30,000 miles.

Good bikes.

..I have a 2005 Electra Glide Classic...it was a May 05 build so it didn't have the oil usage issue some early 05's had...let me tell you..after doing a stage 1 on this bike, it has been absolutely trouble-free for 6 years now...still on the original battery!...runs super smooth with very little heat. After 06 when the 96's came out...I heard a lot of complaints about heat-heat-heat...and 5th gear whine...I have stuck with my 05 and resisted the temptation to trade in...and I'm glad I did...the 88 is a really nice motor...if the bike you're looking at has had a stage 1 done you should be real happy...good luck

Have an 05 ultra great bike. Had valve seals replaced and it has been trouble free since. Stage 1 and that is it runs great, comfortable go anywhere any time no problems. Mileage of the one you are looking at is hardly broken in yet.

I have a stock 2005 Ultra and I have 112,000 miles on mine. I had a cam saft rebuild at 65,000 miles which included the cam bearing , tensioners, and shoes. I had the stator replaced at 89,000 miles and that is all I have ever had done to this bike. My bike runs like a brand new bike right now with a 112,000 miles on it. I would take it anywhere with no reservations as to it tearing up. When I finally wear it out I will send it back to Harley for a rebuild. I have always used Harley Syn 3 since the first 1,000 mile oil change. I am confident at this point that my bike will easily go 150,000 miles.

I just traded a bone stock 06 Ultra last summer. I loved that bike, it had a great ride, and it looked very good. At least once each summer, my wife and I severely overloaded the bike and took a 2 week trip on it.We never had any trouble. As was stated before, somewhere between 20-30,000 miles, you should check your cam chain tensioners. They are a problem which has been well documented. The most serious problem that I had with my 06 was that I absolutely hated the seat(comfort stitch???) easily fixed with a call to Mustang. Good luck, it sounds like you are about to make a life changing purchase. Enjoy!

I like my '03 Ultra Classic a lot. Someone else came along that liked it a little more than I did and now they are riding it but it was a great Ultra Classic. I especially like the solo setup on it. The 88 wasn't a speed demon but if your a poke-along like me, it was a great scoot.

2000 and 2001 if EFI will be the MM injection. 02 was first year of the Delphi. 02 was the last year of the Timken engine bearing and forged cranks. 05's had some valve seal issues and consumed oil if affected. 06 was the last year a carb was available. 06 began the HK radio instead of the Radiosound. 2000-2002 will have the air assist fork suspension. 03-05 will have a left fork cartridge. 06 will have both left and right forks conventional. All will have the old cam chain tensioner setup. 06 had touring fork lock recall, voltage regulator recall and the problematic 8* injector instead of 25* These are just a few of the things associated with the years you asked.

I loved my '04, traded "up" to an '07 and have had some issues. Wish I still had the '04. If I had to do it all over again I would not have bought the '07.

Thanks for the info Dawg - always appreciated.
