Default starter clunks when hot

Okay sorry I know I've seen threads on this but can't find one.

Any help thanks Mike

Go to the blue bar towards the top of page and click the search button Type in the title of your thread and read away. More feedback than you would think. This will search through all of the forums for similar issues

Are you sure it is the starter that is clunking and not the compensator?

Also, have you "load" tested the battery for its true CCA?

I know ACRs reduced the compression in the jugs for easier starts but I don't know if stock 96s have them

Good advice to charge and test the battery, I think Auto Compression Release was added with the 103

Well I don't know what is clunking only that when I push the starter button it clunks and barley turns over (only after running cranks good when cold). I got it with 1700 miles and have not changed anything mechanical. What is a comp? I have not load tested the Batt. it is maybe 3 years old so getting out there battery wise, and usually on a tender . do I just put my meter on it and crank? Thanks

To be clear I know the Comp is sort of a torque converter . What tells you when it should be changed or is it a millage issue . Also have seen things about starter and starter clutch . Is this the year that has problems with these parts? the batt. is an easy and reasonably cheap thing to change should I start there?

Start with a new battery, or having yours load tested.
A bad comp will not make your starter/engine turn over slow.
A bad starter clutch will make a grinding sound and sometimes not engage.
A bad starter motor can and may turn over slow after getting hot - when going bad.

That said, it's probably the battery.
