Default Gutting cat

I saw somewhere a picture of a cat tat was gutted by cutting a coupon out of the side of the cat. I have done numerous searchs and can't find the info on the job. I did find a post on cutting the header in half, removing the cat and rewelding, but I would prefer to cut a coupon. I just need some instruction.

You say cutting a "coupon" to get the cat out? Never heard that term. Either way i drilled mine out. I got a 14" spade bit that is 1 1/4". In an hour you will have a cleaned out cat without cutting a window and having to weld it.

No need to cut....... I did mine with extension and paddle bit, took all of 45 minutes, next time I won't even remove the header first.

Another vote for a spade bit. Why cut and reweld the exhaust when you don't need to? Regardless of how good you are welding it will always be a weak point.

Took 20 minutes to get the cat out once the head pipe was off. I would take it off just to make sure none of the cat material gets up in your motor.

FWIW...wear a face mask if you drill it out...that's some nasty ****!!!

Not saying the drill method is a bad one. If it works, go for it. But to say the weld will cause a weak point is not so. The header pipe itself is paper thin, the chamber that the cat is in is close to 1/8 thick. I cut the top out of the chamber, removed the cat and welded it back together without any problem at all. Now, there's not just a hold in the cat, but its gone completely. No exhaust restriction at all from any left over cat material.

For one of my applications drilling is not an option. The tail piece on a trike header pipe will not allow for drilling the cat.

Thanks for the replies. I plan to cut a coupon on the trike and drill the Limited.

The cat is completely removed with the drilling procedure. The cat is pressed in the head pipe and not welded...as such comes right out. There is no restriction left and no material from the cat left either. Then again to each his own.

I spoke to a number of welders and explained both options...in their words it was better to drill if application allows as a weld is a weld...
