Default Need a new GPS for my 2013 Road Glide Custom

I recently traded in my 2004 Teal Electra Glide Classic for a 2013 Road Glide Custom and I am getting ready to ride from Virginia Beach Va to San Diego Ca at the end of November due to a duty station change. I am looking to get a GPS unit that I can mount to my bars along with a mount for my smart phone. I am trying to avoid having to buy the incredibly expensive unit from the dealership and was hoping for some suggestions.
Thanks
Aaron

why not just use your smartphone? i just sold my garmin zumo 665 and switched to my iphone with the tomtom app. i installed a hardwire kit so my iphone stays charged and outputs sound through the stereo speakers. 1 less device to worry about!

I've been using Garmin on my bike for two years. Not an expensive 660/665, but one I picked up at Costco for ~$125. I think its a 2460 LMT or something like that. Garmins work with the HD ride planner website (you can plan and download routes on the site), and that was what I really wanted in a GPS. Nothing worse than having to ride the route the GPS wants you to ride vs. choosing your own and downloading it. Any Garmin that allows your to store routes will work. I use RAM mounts for mine.

The smartphone option can save you a lot of $. Garmin makes the Zumo 220 made for motorcycles that has just the navigation, $399 on the Garmin website or shop around. I read other riders used a number of the automotive Garmin's on motorcycles with no problems. I have the HD version of the Zumo 550, works great and use if for navigation, satellite radio, and mp3's.

I tried the phone but the display is too small. Looking for a big screen option so I don't have to have readers.

I appreciate all the info, I was going to use my smart phone but the screen is just a bit to small, I am going to look into the Garmin I will let everyone know how it turns out.

can you explain how we can do this? Hell this would work for travelling in the car as well.

LOVE my Zumo 665. Got the XM enabled, so I have awesome satelllite radio and weather radar.
