Question Oil pressure/guage problem

Hi

I have an '06 FLHTCUSE with 30k miles on the clock. Recently I noticed my oil pressure gauge is reading zero and my air temperature gauge is reading maximum. The oil pressure warning light is not coming on.

I recently had a 200 mile ride in heavy rain and wondered if some water had got into the electrics. I've had the fairing off and the fuse box to check for water but there's no obvious problems there. I've taken the oil pressure sender connection off but there's no obvious problem there either.

My gut feeling is that this is a wiring problem. I'm not concerned about the air temp gauge but I am worried about riding the bike if there's no oil pressure.

I'd appreciate any advice anyone can give. Is there any way I can check the pressure sensor for instance?

Thanks

Neil

If it was just the oil pressure gauge, then I might suspect the sensor. But since you now have two gauges that are reading funny, I suspect a compromised connection issue. That issue could be corrosion, a broken or shorted wire. It's also possible that both gauges somehow got damaged in that rain storm, but unlikely.

Check for proper wiring conductivity with a volt ohm meter end to end to rule out wiring issues. Disconnect one wire from the back of each gauge and check the meter movement for the correct resistance. If all that checks out, then it may very well be sensor related.
I wouldn't worry about riding the bike. Your oil pressure is probably just fine if you are not getting any engine light or error codes. By they way, check your error codes as well to see if any are present. That's all I got.

These bikes use a sump oil pump, pressure is never high especially after it is warmed up. I expect something around 30 with a cold engine and oil and maybe 5 with a hot engine and oil at idle raising to 30 at highway speed

Thanks guys. I'd like to check the output from the oil pressure sensor - If that's giving normal output then that's another way of narrowing things down.

I do have a multimeter - is there a way of measuring voltage across these terminals, or resistance that will suggest whether the sensor is working normally? I believe that if this will work, it will be easier than taking the fairing off again!

Hey did you ever figure this out? Same exact problem I’m assuming it’s ground wiring

Most likely a bad ground. Remove windshield - put center bolt back in loosely so the outer doesn't fall as you take 4 bolts off the inner fairing, then remove the middle bolt and outer fairing. Run a length of wire from a shiny bolt on the frame to the guage and see if it works then.
