Next year's trip

Next year's trip
This year, we flew to Seattle and rented a Limited for a week. We put 2K on and hit all the way from canada to Eureka Ca, went over the Chinook pass and generally had a great time.
Next year we want to fly and ride between San Diego, Ca and Las Vegas, Nv. It looks like it's cheaper to fly to San Diego, so it the rentals are the same in San Diego and Las Vegas, we would fly there and rent a UC and ride to Las Vegas.
Would like any input on when the best time of year would be to make the trip, what is the best route between the two places, what's a must see between them and any other useful information any of you might want to share.
I've found that when planned early enough, a trip like this is very affordable.
Thanks for any input.

A buddy and our wives had done that about 6 years ago. We did it the middle of Febuary, for its cold here and winter is draggin.....
Flew into vegas, grabbed a hotel as a homebase, then rented from LasVegas HD.
1st day we headed to the Hoover damn, then onto the grand canyon, which was a good long day trip. The 2nd day we headed west on a major highway, just so we could say we were to CA. No more interest than that. With Google Earth being what it is, you can use satellite view to get a good feel for the terrain.
I would think, like you, peeps that are native to there could chime in and give some great routes to take. We have been out there 5 times and depending on direction traveled, there is allways something new to see.
