FOB battery

FOB battery
Does anyone know if you can take the battery out of the FOB for an extended period of time and it still work OK when you re-install the battery? I left my keys and FOB at a cafe and rode about 30 miles and discovered my mistake at a gas station while trying to get gas. I finally figured out the override code and got the alarm stopped.
But I was wondering if I could remove the battery from the spare FOB and hide it on the bike. Since it would not be working, the bike would still not start for a thief if stolen. But if I got in a similar situation, I could retrieve the FOB and re-insert the battery and go.
I will also get a spare key and hide it on the bike so I can put gas in it if I screw up again. Sheesh. I feel like an idiot. If I had been riding alone, I would not have had the fuel to return to the cafe where I left my keys. Luckily, the guy I was riding with was willing to ride the 30 miles back to the cafe to get my keys which were still where I left them. I guess that was double lucky! LOL My friend earned a free steak dinner tonight!

How far away from your bike at the cafe did you leave the keys. Mine won't activate unless I am a few feet from the bike. Where I keep my keys in the kitchen is only about 20 feet from the bike and it won't start, also screams the RS siren, if I attempt to start or move it if the key and fob is inside.
I also put the push button fuel door on. Tired of digging in pockets when I get gas.

IMO this is a problem that the moco could have easily made sure that it couldn't happen. The alarm should have been programmed so that if you started the bike with the fob in range and rode away the security light would come on and let you know. This way you could turn around and get your fob. Seems like an easy fix.

Humbled by the experience
Thanx to everyone for their replies. I have since learned that any Harley key will open the fuel door. Didn't know that that evening, but it would not have helped. I was riding with a friend who was on a BMW. I now have extra keys and will put the extra FOB on the bike sans battery.
BTW, don't mess with Harley on the extra keys. I just went down to a local locksmith and had two keys made for $5 each. They work perfectly!
