ORIGINAL: geargrinder
I've pulled the captive nut out, mixed up some JB Weld, put some weld in the nut hole, coated the outer nut, reinstalled nut, let dry for 12hrs, installed screwand learned never to over tighten them.

There are 2 lengths of screws used. Get the longer screws. You can use the longer screws in place of the shorter ones if you CAREFULLY make the holes a little deeper. I had to deal with this same issue after hitting a pheasant at 60mph! Fortunately, the left side of the fairing took the impact, not the windshield or myself. Still haven't got my shorts clean!

Since we're on this subject. I too had problems on my e-glide fairing nut turning with the bolts while removing and I got the idea of JB Welding them suckers back in.[sm=signs003.gif] Well to make a short story even shorter...........I put the screws back in. (hi-insight) I am NOT a patient man. So while tring to remove the fairing last night......................( you guessed it)[sm=headbang.gif]...........The JB Weld works great !!!!!. In fact, I now stripped the allen head screw and cannot remove the fairing . Any good ideas ?

When I bought my '01', the lowest right was missing and that was because it was stripped out. H-D doesn't stock a longer screw that matches so for a dime I bought a standard 'pointy' screw an 1/8" longer that is holding just fine. Next time the fairing comes off, I'll probably JB it, or some sort of epoxy, and let it set up then drill a hole to take the H-D screw so all will match. I'm also going to rtv the windshield nuts into place, as they can be dislodged if the screw is taken out. When that happens you are taking the fairing off just to get an "uncaptive" nut back in to place. Unfortunately, the 'long screw' is what is used where mine was missing.
