Help!
took the bike into the dealer for a 95" kit. It was the only kit that was in budget so I decided to go with it. The dealer called today to tell me he had "bad news", he stated that my flywheels slipped and were out of balance and I needed a new motor. I am going tomorrow morning to look at the parts and see what my options are.
Has anyone heard of this, I know they are pressed fit and can happen but my 88A only has 22k on the motor. It is 10 yrs old but I thought it weird.
He quoted me a price of 5100 installed for a reman 88 with the 95 kit in it. Can I build a better motor through Harley for 5k ? I still don't know where im going to find the money but I really would like to ride...
Thanks for the help

If the color $green$ was so important, why did you take it to a dealer or stealer as some on the forum call them? Most of them are charging over $100 an hour for shop time, most indys are still beating that by $20 an hour. If it was running OK when you took it in I would have them put it back together, pay them what you owe them, chalk it up to experience, and ride it until you can afford to do what you want to do, whether it is a 95" upgrade and have the crank straightened, plugged, welded and balanced or do a complete motor replacement with an S&S 111 or other after market motor. If you decide to do this now I would go with an S&S 111, you'll be happier in the long run.

Yes, it is not uncommon for twin cam crankshafts to scissor out of true/balance. It requires a complete tear down to get the crank out no matter That is expensive! There are many good builders out there who can true and weld your crank better than new. That is the way to go if ya really like the bike and plan to keep it. The other route is a crate or used motor. If ya choice to build your motor I'd look at going bigger than 95". Not much more for a 96 stroke crank and case boring.....

Here some info that you might like to see. I don't know where the best place to get one is, but if you do a search on the forum there is plenty of information available. It might cost a bit more than the remanufactured motor, but I think the warranty is better (3yrs.) and the power is definitely better, and you're going to be in debt anyway you look at it.

Well there rates are reasonable, if there work is reliable sounds like you can't go wrong there.
