Default to cool, or not to cool. that is the question

was considering the head cooling fans i've seen out there and have read about a couple here. is it really worthe the $300+ to add a fan to the heads. i mean, Harley been around over a hundred years and just adding a oil cooler is advancing more than Harley (the company) has done to them. so is it really worth adding this add on? I run nothing but amsoil in my bikes so that helps cool it down then run a 10 row oil cooler. how much cooler would the fans bring it down. I know, probably but just want to make my engine last as long as possible without adding to much other crap that may or may not work with my bike. hoping to get feedback from someone else that runs similar oils and cooler i do on a EG TC88 that has added the fans.

I'd be willing to bet you could run that bike for the rest of your life with just the oil cooler, hell even without it. Sure the fans will help but unless you are in "bike week style" traffic everyday in the blistering heat, its not going to be the difference in life or death of your engine. I would just be happy with it and ride on. There are millions of us out there, some in hotter climates than you, laying down the miles for years and years without sophisticated fan cooling systems.

Of course someone who builds or buys the $300 fan setups will come in here to justify it ,and tell us that our engines are teetering on the very fine line of absolute destruction if we ride one more mile without their fancy fan widget....

If your running efi your bike will run hotter and you may want to consider it, but if your running a carb, just an oil cooler should be plenty fine.

Been running fine without additional air or oil cooling since 1903.

I will probably keep going like i have been. just a thought that went through my head and was going to react then thought i would throw it out and see the replies i got. think i will leave well enough alone. hell, I have 2 TC88's and haven't had any trouble but was a thought.

if you do a lot of parades then you may wanna consider it.. I'm thinking of fabbing up a fan for the cpl of parades I do a yr. I can't justify the big $$ for that setup tho..

My TC88 ran a hell of a lot cooler (leg feel only there, no gauge to tell me) than my TC96, which could bake cookies. My 96 just has an oil cooler and I have been stuck in South Texas traffic in summer more times than I can count with (wait for it...) dino oil, and at 54k, she's running just fine...I think about those fan coolers from time to time but that's me worrying about the motor more than anything. My motor doesn't seem to worry too much, even after the amount of heat abuse I put her through...

The cooling fans are for your physical comfort, if your motor is frying your legs with heat.
Your motor will be just fine like you have it.

I have the H-D Parade Fan installed on my FLHTK. I really don't think it is worth it in the long run. But the few times a year it really comes in handy. That being said, it's a personal choice to fan or not. As I said, I have the H-D version, there are others out there that do a good job and for less.
