Just like your last one, this will be neat to see all done. Looks like a good bike.

thanks guys.

got the top end tore down and ready to drop it off at the machine shop tomorrow. he's a shovelhead guy and i'll take his opinion on what he thinks. will either be a hone and same size pistons with new rings. or bore it if needed, but the cylinder walls look great. so we'll see. will also have him go through the heads, replace the guides and seals, and do a valve job. i'm going to stay with the stock size valves and will entertain getting a cam, but gotta price everything out first.

i'm more interested in what he says as far as keeping the hydraulic lifters currently in it, or changing over to solids and new pushrods.

everything came apart pretty easy. 2 of the studs on the rocker boxes cam out with the nut. they're pretty rusted up so i'll get some new hardware. once the rocker boxes are cleaned up and taken apart, i'll be taking a stab at polishing them myself. i'll post up a little "how to" if it works.

thanks
mike

oh, first thing today was discovering a broken motor mount.

tore down

ready for inspection

pics are hard to see, but the walls are in great shape. no scoring and still have some cross hatch marks.

pistons were all gummed up with crud

i lent my micrometer to a friend so i couldn't measure them today. but the pistons have "H-D" stamped on the inside and the model number 88L52. they're also made by Mahle. so may be original, or just some OE made replacements. i'll measure them tomorrow and report back

bagged and tagged

will complete tear down tomorrow hopepfully and start prepping the frame

I am pretty good at polishing aluminum, and I have a scotchbrite pad that I have made round , and put on an arbor, it speeds up that first step a ton running it on a die grinder.

When I had my Shovel FXR I had someone split the cases and I polished them as well as the rocker covers. It wasn't expensive and made a lot of difference in the way the bike looked.
